From the 20th of June to the 26th of June, Thornbury Community Services (TCS) is celebrating Learning Disability Week 2022.
Learning Disability Week 2022
The learning disability charity Mencap created Learning Disability Week to raise awareness of learning disabilities and make sure ‘the world hears what life is like if you have a learning disability.' The charity will be telling the stories of adults and children across the UK who live with learning disabilities. They will be sharing details of how the pandemic has changed their life, how they would like to get back to normal after the pandemic, and the important roles their friends, family and local communities play in their lives.
The theme
For Learning Disability Week 2022, Mencap has chosen the theme ‘Living Life with a Learning Disability’ to show how adults and children with learning disabilities are reconnecting with their friends and local communities after the pandemic restrictions are relaxing. They want to create discussions about the issues people are still facing after the pandemic, such as isolation and dealing with poor mental health and anxiety.
How can you support Learning Disability Week this year?
To support Learning Disability Week 2022, Mencap has created a fundraising pack for you to run activities and events to raise money for those with learning disabilities. According to Mencap, only 6% of adults with learning disabilities known to their local authority in England are in paid work. Mencap wants to raise awareness of this by asking people to hold fundraising events such as coffee mornings to educate people on supporting those with learning disabilities. How are we support Learning Disability Week at TCS?
To support Learning Disability Week 2022 and its theme, ‘Living Life with a Learning Disability’. We’ve asked our clients to share what it's like to live with a learning disability through pictures. Many of our clients have their personal goals and aspirations that our fantastic team of nurses and support workers enable them to achieve, and we want to shine a light on their incredible contributions.
Throughout the week, we will be sharing photos of our clients carrying out their daily activities and hobbies. All of our clients' photos can be found on our Learning Disability Week landing page, along with information about the Learning Disability Week campaign.
One of our Learning Disability Nurses (RNLD), Joscelyn, is stepping into the spotlight this week to tell us about her role as a learning disability nurse. Joscelyn discusses the care she delivers to our client in the community and how she wants to progress further in her career at TCS.
