Learning Disability Week 2022

We’re supporting Learning Disability Week

From the 20th of June to the 26th of June, we are celebrating Learning Disability Week 2022. Using the buttons below, you can find out how we’re supporting Learning Disability Week at Thornbury Community Services, the theme for this year's Learning Disability Week and how you can get involved and show your support:

Learning Disability Week 2022

Learning Disability Week was created by the learning disability charity, Mencap. The campaign aims to raise awareness of learning disabilities and make sure ‘the world hears what life is like if you have a learning disability.’

For Learning Disability Week 2022, Mencap will be sharing the stories of adults and children across the UK who live with learning disabilities. The main focus for this year is to highlight how the pandemic has changed the lives of those with learning disabilities and how they would like to get back to normal after the pandemic.

Learning Disability Week theme

For this year's Learning Disability Week, Mencap has chosen the theme ‘Living Life with a Learning Disability’ to show how adults and children with learning disabilities are reconnecting with their friends and local communities after the pandemic restrictions are relaxing. The charity wants to raise awareness around the issues people are facing after the pandemic, such as isolation and poor mental health and anxiety. Individuals will be sharing their stories with Mencap on how they dealt with the pandemic and where they are today.

Here at TCS, we believe in the power of connectivity and creativity. So, we always encourage our clients to take part in activities they enjoy. To support this year's Learning Disability Week and the theme, we want to share our inspirational client photos to raise awareness of what life with a learning disability is like post-pandemic. You can see all of our Learning Disability Week client photos on our Facebook and LinkedIn pages.

Support Learning Disability Week

Mencap has created a fundraising pack for you to run activities and events in your local area to raise money for those with learning disabilities. According to Mencap, only 6% of adults with learning disabilities known to their local authority in England are in paid work. Mencap wants to raise awareness by asking people to hold fundraising events such as coffee mornings to educate people on supporting those with learning disabilities to get paid work. You can download your fundraising pack here.

You can also download and print the Learning Disability Week fundraising poster to share with your friends, family and colleagues. Download your copy of the poster here.

If you want to show your support and get social during Learning Disability Week, you can download Mencap's social media banners here and here to share on your social media profiles.

A life of a learning disability nurse

One of our Learning Disability Nurses, Joscelyn, is stepping into the spotlight this week to tell us about her role as a learning disability nurse at TCS and the incredible care and support she delivers to one of our clients. You can learn about Joscelyn's journey with TCS here
