Throughout November, we will be focusing on men’s health to support Movember and International Men’s Day. Both campaigns celebrate the contributions of men across the world, raise awareness about the common health risks men face and raise funds to support men’s health services and studies.
The importance of November for men
The month of November is an important month for men and boys of all ages. Throughout the entire month, there are several events dedicated to men. Movember is a month-long campaign that focuses on raising money for men’s health. The 19th of November is International Men’s Day which celebrates their contributions and achievements.
Below we discuss what Movember and International Men’s Day is and the purpose of both campaigns.
All about Movember
Movember is a month-long campaign run by the Movember charity. The campaign involves growing moustaches and taking part in other fun activities during November to raise awareness of men’s health issues such as prostate and testicular cancer and men’s suicide.
Movember started in 2003 when two friends decided to bring back the famous moustache by convincing their friends to grow one. The idea was inspired by a friend’s mother, who raised money for breast cancer.
By 2004, the two friends created a website and started funding men’s health projects. Since then, the charity has grown in size and continues to support projects and help change the face of men’s health. You can view the Movember timeline on their website.
The Movember charity works closely with global men’s health partners to ensure every project they fund is collaborative and transparent. The charity monitors each project using report cards that measure the impact of the projects. You can view their latest projects here.
All about International Men’s Day
Just like Movember, International Men’s Day takes place in November once a year. The 19th of November marks International Men’s Day, which is celebrated worldwide and focuses on the values men bring to the world, their families and communities. This year’s theme is “Better relations between men and women.”
International Men’s Day was created to acknowledge men and celebrate the positive value they bring to the world. The annual day shines a light on men’s contributions to their local communities, families and the world.
There are a range of things to do for International Men’s Day, such as organising your own event, sharing the organisation’s resources on social media and attending public seminars and forums. You can find out more about how to support International Men’s Day here.
We will be sharing a range of articles and stories on our Facebook and LinkedIn pages this month to support Movember and International Men’s Day. Make sure to follow us on social media to keep up to date.
